ICHARM -- The International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management

ICHARM Research Mission in Malaysia

Venue: Malaysia
Date: 24 March 2009
Participant(s) from ICHARM: Resarch Specialist, Rabindra Osti

ICHARM and the Civil Engineering Research Institute (CERI), both under the Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) of Japan, held a one-day workshop on “Flood Plain Management” on 24 March 2009 in Malaysia jointly with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (IDI) of Malaysia. Senior Researcher Rabindra Osti represented ICHARM and gave an introductory presentation on its various activities.

The workshop was chaired by DID Director General Datto Ir. Hj. Ahmad Husaini Bin Sulaiman and attended by delegates from both Japan and Malaysia, some of whom also made presentations on their research studies. The Humid Tropical Centre (HTC) under DID updated the current development of the proposed ICHARM-HTC joint study on the impact assessment of the 2007 flood disaster, which occurred in Johor, Malaysia. Several Malaysian universities and research institutes also joined the workshop and discussed on the current flood problems and possible field research aiming to reduce the flood disaster risk that Malaysia is facing. After the workshop, PWRI and DID delegates visited the Muar River basin, one of the candidate sites for the proposed field research, to inspect the ground situation, and identified several flood-related issues.

ICHARM has been expanding its collaboration with other UNESCO water centres. ICHARM and CERI are interested in jointly conducting small-scale, field-based research with DID and other Malaysian research institutes.
