ICHARM -- The International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management

Field trip to Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Venue: Vietnam
Date: 9-13 February 2009
Participant(s) from ICHARM: Research Specialist, Pham Thanh Hai

Research specialist Pham Thanh Hai of ICHARM spent five days (Feb. 9-13) on a field trip to Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The main purpose of the trip was for collecting data to support ongoing hydraulic and climate change modeling procedures, in addition to sharing research information on flood inundation modeling in the area, and making field survey in some estuaries of Mekong River. During the trip, Hai visited institutions closely working with climate change and water resources related issues in the Mekong Delta area, like Water Resources University, Sub-National Institute of Agricultural Planning and Projection (Sub-NIAPP), Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorology Center (SRHMC), Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning (SIWRP), Southern Institute for Water Resources Research (SIWRR), Center of Agricultural Economy & GIS (CAEGIS) (formerly Integrated Resources Mapping Center), and Sub-Institute of Hydrometeorology & Environment of South Vietnam (SIHYMETE). He made introduction about ICHARM activities, and focused on Integrated Flood Analysis System (IFAS), one advanced technology of ICHARM, to these local institutions. And they had discussions on 2D-FEM model as well as on other hydrodynamic models those local institutions are using recently. Hai spent one day for a field survey at Mekong River floodplain in BenTre province and CuaTieu, CuaDai and CoChien estuaries of Mekong River to have a better perception of the real situation of river canal systems and landuse in the area. Furthermore, he has received from the local institutions some new documentary concerning with climate change and available data to support to his ongoing 2D-FEM modeling procedures.
