IFAS

ICHARM has developed an IFAS-based flood forecasting/warning system.

Reduced calculation time

In the development of the new flood forecasting/warning system, we succeeded to dramatically reduce IFAS’s calculation time. The long calculation time had been pointed out as one of IFAS’s weaknesses. This drastic time reduction became possible by adding new functions such as importing and processing rainfall data automatically and extracting only necessary data. Shortening calculation time is crucial for flood forecasting systems since river management authorities use them as an assist tool for decision-making in flood forecasting and warning.

Automatic functions

In countries and areas lacking adequate hydrological information, data downloading is often disrupted due to poor internet connection and power supply, resulting in failure to download a long period of satellite rainfall data. In order to solve this problem, we have added a new function to the system that downloads satellite rainfall automatically every hour around the clock. The system was equipped with another new automatic function that also conducts the hourly procedure of importing rainfall data into the run-off analysis model, calculating the data, and delivering a warning after comparing the result with the threshold value. Warnings can be displayed on the screen or sent to e-mail addresses registered in advance.

Three-layer-tank model

In addition to the original run-off analysis model with a two-layer tank, a three-layer-tank distributed run-off analysis model is also mounted to the system as another calculation engine to simulate unsaturated layers.  This has upgraded the simulation capability of the system for the long term run-off analysis.

New correction equation

Furthermore, the new system is designed to provide users with an additional correction equation for satellite-based rainfall along with the original correction equation resulting from typhoon rain research. Also, the upgraded equations now allow users to set the correction coefficient freely depending on your needs.
