Bangladesh is a hot spot of global change in population, economy, and climate. This densely populated south Asian sub-tropical country is situated in the delta of world’s three large trans-boundary river, the-Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna (shortly called the GBM). These GBM basins are the 3rd largest fresh water outlet to the world ocean. The total catchment area of these basins is 1.7 million sq. km. and only 7% of which lies within Bangladesh, but 98% flow of water of GBM basins passes through Bangladesh and finally flows to the Bay of Bengal. As such, almost every year, Bangladesh experiences floods from flows of these trans-boundary rivers as well as by localized heavy rainfall.
In order to reduce flood damages for the effective flood management, access to trans-boundary basin-wide hydro-met observed data of GBM basins is necessary. But, trans-boundary observed data are not available thus flood management for Bangladesh has become quite challenging. While searching for an authority who can bridge gaps to the available local observed data to fully obtain GBM basins hydro-met observed data, freely available global forcing satellite data are found reliable, because satellite data has no boundary.
Main Research Topic(s); 主な研究内容:
  1. Improvement of hydrological flood simulations in trans-boundary GBM river basins using multi-platform observations.
  2. Assessment of flood damages over Bangladesh taking into account physical hazards and social vulnerabilities under climate change.
