Kuniyoshi Takeuchi is the Advisor of International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHARM), Tsukuba, Japan for which he had served as the founding director for 2006-2014. He is a professor emeritus of University of Yamanashi, where he taught hydrology and water resources till 2007. He got his BS, MS and Dr.Eng. in civil engineering at University of Tokyo, and Ph.D. in city and regional planning at University of North Carolina. He has been specialized in surface hydrology, water resource systems analysis and disaster management. His current interest includes, inter alia, global flood risk monitoring and climate change adaptation on hydro-met extremes. He served the chairperson of Inter-Governmental Council of UNESCO IHP for 1998-2000 and the president of IAHS for 2001-2005. He is now serving the chair of IUGG GeoRisk Commission and a vice-chair of Science Committee of ICSU-ISSC-UNISDR Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR). He is a recipient of IAHS-UNESCO-WMO International Hydrology Prize (2012).
